The Asian Supercar Challenge was established in 2003 by the supercar Club Hong Kong to increase the levels of professionalism and worldwide interest in the Championship.

In 2009, the series evolved to become the GT3 Asia Challenge and was held as part of the Asian Festival Of Speed, competing at four different circuits. Two rounds were held in Shanghai, two in Sepang, one in Sentul, followed by its first ever trip to Japan, at the Autopolis Circuit. The end of season invitational race was held at Asia's oldest street circuit during the prstigious 56th Macau Grand Prix.

The 2011 season saw another evolution of the Championship, combining GT3 Asia with the GT4 Asia Cup to form a brand new and even more competitive Championship - GT Asia.
